Many furniture shoppers make these mistakes when buying furniture. Avoiding them will help you find furnishings that you will be happy with for years to come.

Do not purchase Furniture on an impulse. Regardless of the deal, regardless of how bad you need it, do not shop for furniture with doing the proper research. Sure the sales person will tell you that this deal is only good today, but that's not true. If you were to come back one week later, chances are pretty good that you would get the same price. So instead of making that impulse purchase that you may very well regret in the near future, take your time with your furniture purchase. You will need to consider the size, design and price of the furniture as well as the reputation of the furniture maker before making your purchase. I help myself avoid impulse purchases by leaving my check book and credit card at home.

Do not shop for furniture without your measuring tape. Not everyone is as gifted as I am when it comes to determining if a piece of furniture will fit nicely into a room. (I really do have a knack for this.) You should never shop for furniture without your measuring tape. You need to measure your home entrances, the space where you plan to place your furniture, and the furniture itself. If you move a lot, avoid buying furniture that will not fit into a standard 36-inch door opening.

Do not ask for too many opinions when buying furniture. Getting your girlfriends opinion when purchasing furniture can be helpful. Asking your mother to give her furniture advice may be tireing. Surveying all of your friends and relatives before making a furniture purchase is stupid. While it is OK to get information on quality furniture brands, and experiences with different stores, having someone help you decide furniture style is a bad idea. You could easily end up with furniture that you have absolutely no attachment to. Even worse, you may realize that you hate it, and quickly replace it.

Do not refuse professional help when purchasing furniture. Many furniture stores hire designers to help you with your furniture purchase. Most people however, including myself, prefer to buy furniture solo. It might be a better idea, unless you are a decorator yourself to get some advice from the store designers. The designers are also often the sales people. My only caveat is to be careful if they offer to come to your home to help you finish designing it. While the service will be free of charge, and the result will be beautiful, they may pressure you into buying more than you can afford and financing it all.

Do not buy furniture at the wrong time of day. Yes, there is a wrong time to go furniture shopping. Weekends are for looking because the sales people will likely be helping someone else and you can wave them away more easily. But when you are ready to buy and want a salespersons full attention you should consider shopping on a weekday morning.
